Continuing on from the last blog, Joseph has been sold to Potiphar, the captain of Pharaoh’s guard. The word says that “the Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man…His master saw that the Lord was with him and that the Lord caused all that he did to succeed in his hands. So Joseph found favor in his sight.” Joseph is put in charge of everything that his master owns, and therefore, the blessing of Lord was on everything that he had.
As we all know, as soon as God has us centered on Him, that is when we are most vulnerable to Satan’s attacks. And it’s the same thing with Joseph. Satan comes in form of a woman; specifically, in the form of Potiphar’s wife. She saw how handsome Joseph was, and several times she tries to entice him, to seduce him. Day after day she does this. Satan is very persistent. But everyday, Joseph ignores her. He does not listen to her.
But one day she physically grabs him, by his garment. And he flees, leaving his outer garment in her hand. He’s not naked, but in his underwear. He knew he had to flee. And he did.
Well, of course, she is not happy. So, she accuses him of trying to rape her. She blames him. And her husband believes her. I mean, it’s slave vs. Potiphar’s “faithful” wife. Slave loses. In fact, Joseph is put in prison. But, the word says, “the Lord was with Joseph and showed him steadfast love and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.” The keeper of the prison, eventually, put Joseph in charge of all the prisoners. “…because the Lord was with him. And whatever he did, the Lord made it succeed.”
The men who were in charge of Joseph in this story, first Potiphar, then the keeper of the prison, both saw that the Lord was with Joseph. Do people see who you are living for?
The Lord was with him. This was repeated throughout the story. Do you believe that the Lord is with you? Do you live like it?
Again, we see such not good things happening to Joseph, any yet we also know that God is there through it all, sovereign in all that He does. Do you believe He is in control of the chaos? Do you live like it?
Again, I repeat Romans 8:28, for any fellow Josephs out there who don’t see anything but chaos looming over them.
“And we know that for those that love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.”
